Fairfield Inn & Suites Miami Airport South With Kids: Pre-Cruise Review
If you’re flying into Miami before a cruise with kids, one of the biggest things to figure out is how you’re actually getting from the airport to your hotel, and then to the cruise port the next morning.
That’s exactly why I’ve now stayed at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Miami Airport South twice, including once with my mom and my two toddlers before sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas.
This hotel works well for one very specific reason. It has both a free airport shuttle and a shuttle to the Port of Miami, which is surprisingly hard to find in one place, especially if you’re trying to avoid dealing with car seats.
It’s not a fancy stay, and it’s not somewhere you’re going to spend a lot of time. But for a quick overnight before a cruise, it’s simple, reliable, and makes the whole process a lot easier.

Is the Fairfield Inn & Suites Miami Airport South Worth It With Kids?
Yes, especially for a quick pre-cruise stay when your main goal is keeping things simple.
The biggest advantage here is the transportation setup. Having both a free airport shuttle and a shuttle to the Port of Miami makes getting around much easier, especially if you’re traveling with kids and trying to avoid bringing car seats.
It’s not a luxury stay, and it’s not somewhere you’re going to hang out for long. But it’s clean, straightforward, and does exactly what you need it to do the night before a cruise.
If your priority is convenience and an easy transition from the airport to your ship, this is a really solid option.

Before you head to the airport, make sure you’ve thought through the documents your family may need, including IDs, passports, birth certificates, consent letters, health documents, and helpful backup copies.
Location: Close to Both the Airport and the Port
The Fairfield Inn & Suites Miami Airport South is located just southeast of Miami International Airport and west of the Port of Miami, which makes it a really convenient spot for a pre-cruise stay.
You’re close enough to the airport that getting in after a flight feels quick and manageable, but still positioned well for getting to the cruise port the next morning without a long transfer.
One thing that ended up being surprisingly helpful was having a Target just down the road. I needed to grab diapers before boarding, since I usually pack light and don’t check bags, and being able to run out quickly without going far made that part of the trip much easier.
Overall, the location works really well for what this hotel is meant to do, which is give you an easy, low-stress place to land before your cruise.
The Room: Simple, Spacious Enough, but Not Perfect
We’ve stayed in two different room types here, and both were pretty straightforward.
On our first visit, we had a standard guest room with two queen beds. It had been recently renovated and was clean and functional, but not especially memorable.
On our second stay, I booked a Larger Studio, which worked much better for me with the kids. It had a king bed, a pull-out couch in a separate sitting area, and a full-size bathtub, which is always helpful when you’re traveling with little kids.
We split the space between all of us pretty easily. My mom and I shared the bed, my toddler slept on the pull-out, and my baby used a Pack ‘n Play provided by the hotel.
The only issue we ran into was with the Pack ‘n Play. The one we received was broken on the bottom, so the mattress kept sinking through and my daughter was essentially sleeping on the support bars. We arrived after 1 AM and I didn’t have it in me to call down and deal with it, so I layered blankets to make it work for the night.
That kind of thing isn’t a dealbreaker for me personally, but I know sleep setup can be a big factor for families, and it’s something I would double-check or address right away if it happens during your stay.
Overall, the room worked well for a short, overnight stay before a cruise, especially with the extra space in the studio. It’s not luxurious, but it’s comfortable enough for what you need.
What It Actually Feels Like to Stay at Fairfield Inn & Suites Miami Airport South
This felt like a very typical Fairfield Inn stay in the best way. It was clean, simple, and easy to navigate, which is exactly what you want after a long travel day.
It’s not a hotel with a strong “vibe” or anything memorable about the space itself. It’s more of a place you land, get settled, and reset before the next part of your trip. That worked really well for us, especially arriving late at night with kids.
The only time I felt a little unsure was when we arrived after 1 AM and had to walk from the back garage around to the front entrance. The area felt fine during the day, but a little less comfortable at night. I never felt unsafe, just a bit more aware of my surroundings than I would have preferred.
Overall, it felt straightforward and manageable, which is really what matters for a short pre-cruise stay.
Getting to the Cruise Port (What to Expect)
I always recommend arriving in your cruise departure city at least one day early. Flights get delayed, connections get missed, and the cruise will not wait for you.
That’s exactly why we’ve now stayed at Fairfield Inn & Suites Miami Airport South twice as our pre-cruise base, most recently with my baby and toddler before our Royal Caribbean cruise on Freedom of the Seas. It makes the logistics of getting from the airport to the ship feel a lot more manageable.
Airport Shuttle From Miami International Airport
The hotel offers a free shuttle to and from Miami International Airport every 30 minutes between 6:30 AM and 10:30 PM.
On our first visit, my husband and I used it and it was really easy. We landed, called the hotel, and got picked up without any issues. Not having to figure out a ride right away made a big difference after a travel day.
Cruise Port Shuttle to PortMiami
The cruise shuttle is one of the biggest advantages of staying here.
At the time of our stay, the cruise shuttle was $15 per person, with young kids riding free, though the front desk couldn’t confirm an exact age cutoff. A third-party shuttle took us directly to PortMiami. We paid the driver directly and were able to use a credit card without any issues.
This is one of those things that made the whole trip feel easier. Instead of coordinating transportation or worrying about car seats, we just showed up and got on the shuttle.
That was a big reason this setup worked so well for me. I don’t travel with car seats, and figuring out how to get from the airport to the cruise port without them can feel a little tricky. The shuttle takes that completely off your plate.
How We Handled It With Kids
On our second trip, we actually did part of the trip differently.
We actually flew into Fort Lauderdale for this trip, since that’s what worked best for our flights. We rented a car there because we needed car seats for that portion, then drove down to Miami. I returned the car to the Enterprise location right across the street from the hotel and walked back with the stroller just in time for the cruise shuttle the next morning.
It ended up being a really smooth setup, even with multiple steps.
Why This Setup Works
When you’re traveling with kids, especially as the only adult, having both a free airport shuttle and a simple cruise transfer takes a lot off your plate.
You don’t have to think through every step or figure things out on the fly. It’s already set up for you.
That’s what makes this hotel stand out for a pre-cruise stay.
Amenities and Dining
This hotel covers the basics, but that’s really all you need for a one-night stay.
There’s a free breakfast included, which is typical for Fairfield Inn. We skipped it on our second stay and grabbed something quick nearby instead, but it’s a helpful option if you want something easy before heading out.
There are also plenty of food options close by, including quick takeout and delivery, which makes it easy to keep things simple with kids.
The hotel has a pool, fitness center, and other standard amenities, but we didn’t use any of them since both of our stays were short and focused on getting in and out.
Staying at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Miami Airport South With Kids: Pros and Cons
What I Loved:

- Breakfast hours are limited, so you may miss it if you’re heading out early for your cruise
- The Pack ‘n Play we received was broken, which made sleep setup more difficult than it should have been
- Arriving late at night felt a little uncomfortable, especially walking from the garage to the front entrance
