Moxy Southampton With Kids: Pre-Cruise Review
Before our European Disney Dream sailing, I needed a hotel in Southampton that would make the night before our cruise feel simple. I was traveling with my two toddlers, so the priority wasn’t anything fancy. I just needed something close to the port, easy to get in and out of, and manageable with our luggage and double stroller.
I always recommend arriving in your cruise departure city at least one day early. Delays happen, and the ship won’t wait for you, so having a simple, low-stress setup the night before matters more than you expect.
I ended up booking the Moxy Southampton, and I’ll be honest, this was one of those stays that felt very different in real life than it does when you’re booking it.
On paper, it checked all the boxes. The location is hard to beat, especially for a cruise departure. But once we were actually there, some parts of the stay felt a lot more chaotic and tight than I expected, especially with two little kids.
That said, it did make cruise morning incredibly easy, which counts for a lot.
If you’re trying to figure out whether the Moxy Southampton is a good fit before a cruise with kids, I’ll walk you through exactly what our experience looked like, what worked, what didn’t, and what I’d think about before booking.
Quick Answer: Is Moxy Southampton Worth It With Kids?
Yes, but only if your main priority is making cruise day as easy as possible.
The biggest advantage of the Moxy Southampton is the location. It’s extremely close to the cruise port, which makes getting there on embarkation day simple and low-stress. When you’re traveling with kids, luggage, and everything that comes with it, that kind of convenience matters more than you expect.
That said, the actual hotel experience felt very different from what I expected.
The rooms are small, the layout isn’t especially functional for traveling with kids, and overall it didn’t feel like a place where you’d want to spend much time beyond a quick overnight stay. It worked for what we needed, but it didn’t feel comfortable or relaxing.
It’s a good fit if:
- You want to be as close to the cruise port as possible
- You’re only staying one night before your cruise
- Your priority is convenience, not comfort
- You’re traveling light and don’t need much space
It might not be the best fit if:
- You’re traveling with multiple young kids, a stroller, or a lot of luggage
- You want space to spread out or unwind before your cruise
- You prefer a calmer, more traditional hotel experience
- You’re staying in Southampton for more than one night
For us, it did exactly what we needed it to do from a logistics standpoint. But if I were planning the same trip again, I would think more carefully about whether convenience alone is worth the tradeoffs with space and comfort.

Location: As Easy As It Gets for Cruise Day
This is easily the biggest advantage of staying at the Moxy Southampton.
The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from the bus station and roughly a 15-minute walk to the Horizon Cruise Terminal. I did the entire route on foot with a double stroller and our luggage, no taxis, no transfers, no extra planning needed.
When you’re traveling with kids, that kind of simplicity makes a huge difference. There’s no coordinating transportation, no waiting around, and no stress about how you’re getting to the port on embarkation morning. You can just walk out the door and go.
On the way to the hotel, we even passed a small playground about halfway along the route. We ended up coming back to it later so the kids could run around and reset after the travel day, which was a really nice bonus.
The hotel is also right next to the West Quay shopping center, which ended up being surprisingly helpful. I had to run in and buy a new pair of shoes after mine gave out from all the walking in London, and having that right next door made it easy to handle without adding another stop to the day.
From a logistics standpoint, it’s hard to find a more convenient setup for a pre-cruise stay.
The Room: Very Tight and Not Designed for Kids
We booked a Queen Sleeper room, and at just 183 square feet, it was very tight.
I expected it to be small. This is Europe, after all. But this felt next-level cramped. There was space for the bed, one small chair, and not much else. Once the Pack ‘n Play was set up, we were basically stepping over each other to move around the room.
One thing to be aware of is that this room type is officially listed for a maximum occupancy of two people. Before booking, I called the hotel to explain that I was traveling alone with a 1- and 3-year-old, with the younger one sleeping in a Pack ‘n Play. They were able to approve it, which I really appreciated.
It’s not something I would assume is guaranteed, but it did show a willingness to work with our situation, which made a big difference.
The hotel did provide a Pack ‘n Play for free, which made that setup possible, but it didn’t come with a mattress. It was just a hard board at the bottom, so I ended up layering blankets and sheets to make it a little more comfortable for my daughter.
One of the more frustrating parts of the room was the lighting. There was a motion-activated light built into the underside of the bed that couldn’t be turned off. Every time I got up during the night, it turned on automatically and lit up the room. It shined directly toward the crib and woke my daughter up more than once. I called the front desk to ask if there was a way to disable it, but there wasn’t.
The bathroom was also extremely small, with just a shower, sink, and toilet, and it had a noticeable musty smell that carried into the room if the door was left open.
There also wasn’t much space for a stroller inside the room, which made things even tighter.
On the positive side, we did have a view of the ship from our window, which was a fun detail the night before the cruise.
Overall, the room worked for a quick overnight stay, but it didn’t feel comfortable or easy to manage with kids.

What It Actually Feels Like to Stay at Moxy Southampton
The overall vibe of the Moxy Southampton is very “cool,” but not necessarily very practical with kids.
It leans heavily into that industrial, modern style with concrete floors, bold furniture, and bright neon accents. The check-in desk is built right into the bar area, which was already busy and loud when we arrived. It’s the kind of space that probably feels fun and energetic if you’re traveling without kids, but with two toddlers, it felt a little chaotic right from the start.
That energy carries throughout the hotel. It didn’t feel like a place where you could really unwind or settle in before a cruise. It felt more like a quick stopover, somewhere you crash for the night because it’s convenient, not somewhere you’re going to relax.
That doesn’t make it a bad hotel, it just makes it a very specific kind of stay.
Getting to the Cruise Port (What to Expect)
One of the biggest reasons we chose the Moxy Southampton was how easy it made getting to the cruise port.
We came in from London the day before and stayed overnight so we didn’t have to worry about delays or timing on embarkation day. From the Southampton Central bus station, it was about a 10-minute walk to the hotel, which I did with a double stroller and all of our luggage.
The next morning, we walked from the hotel to the Horizon Cruise Terminal, which took about 15 minutes. No taxis, no transfers, no coordinating anything. Just a straightforward walk from the hotel to the ship.
That simplicity is really where this hotel shines. When you’re traveling with kids, especially on your own and trying to avoid things like car seats, not having to figure out transportation on cruise morning takes a huge amount of pressure off.
One thing to be aware of is that the hotel doesn’t offer any kind of shuttle or arranged transportation to the port. It’s very much a “get yourself there” setup, which works perfectly because of how close it is, but it’s something to know going in.
The only part that felt a little chaotic was the elevators on the morning of the cruise. Everyone was checking out at the same time, and we had to wait a while to find one that wasn’t already full by the time it reached our floor.
Even with that, being able to walk straight to the terminal without any extra steps made the whole process feel much easier.
Amenities and Dining
There is a breakfast buffet available for an extra charge, but we ended up skipping it. With an early cruise morning, it felt easier to grab something quick nearby and plan to eat once we got on the ship.
There are a few convenient options within walking distance, including a Starbucks, which worked well for a simple breakfast before heading to the port.
The hotel itself is pretty minimal when it comes to family-focused amenities. It’s more geared toward short stays and convenience rather than spending time on-site, which fits the overall feel of the property.
Staying at Moxy Southampton With Kids: Pros and Cons
What I Liked:
- Easy walk from the bus station and to the cruise port
- They were able to accommodate three of us in one room with a Pack ‘n Play after I called ahead
- Bookable with Marriott Bonvoy points
- Early check-in made a big difference after a travel day
- The shopping center next door was convenient for last-minute needs
What I Didn’t Love:
- The room felt extremely tight, even by European standards
- The Pack ‘n Play didn’t include a mattress
- The motion-activated under-bed light couldn’t be turned off and disrupted sleep
- The bathroom had a noticeable odor that carried into the room
- The lobby was loud and didn’t feel very kid-friendly
- Not much space to move around with a stroller or multiple people
A More Comfortable Alternative for a Pre-Cruise Stay
If your priority is convenience above everything else, the Moxy works.
But if you’re traveling with kids and want something that feels a little calmer and easier to manage, I would personally look at other options.
For our next trip, I would likely book the voco Southampton by IHG.
It’s in a similar area and still very close to the cruise port, but based on reviews, the overall feel seems much more relaxed and family-friendly. A lot of families mention that the staff is welcoming, the atmosphere is calmer, and the experience feels a lot less chaotic than what we had at the Moxy.
That kind of environment makes a big difference when you’re traveling with kids, especially the night before a cruise when everyone is already a little tired and out of routine.
Is Moxy Southampton Worth It With Kids?
Yes, but only if your main goal is making cruise day as simple as possible.
For us, the location made everything easier. Being able to walk from the bus station to the hotel, and then from the hotel straight to the cruise terminal the next morning, took a huge amount of pressure off. When you’re managing kids, luggage, and a stroller, that kind of setup really matters.
At the same time, the actual stay wasn’t the most comfortable. The room was very tight, the overall vibe felt loud and more bar-focused, and a few of the design quirks made it harder to manage with kids than I expected.
It worked for a quick overnight before boarding the ship, but it’s not somewhere I would choose if comfort or space were a priority.
If your main focus is an easy, low-stress cruise morning, this is a solid option. If you want a calmer or more family-friendly experience, I would look at other hotels nearby.
