CLT Airport Overlook With Kids: Playground & Plane Watching

We’ve flown through Charlotte Douglas International Airport a few times now, and the CLT Airport Overlook has become one of our favorite places to stop when we’re nearby.

We have visited twice. On our first visit, both of my kids were able to play on the aviation-themed playground while we watched planes take off and land nearby. On our most recent Charlotte trip, I stopped again with my almost-5-year-old son before our flight home. The playground happened to be temporarily closed that day, but he still had a great time running along the little runway-inspired paths, watching airplanes, and eating ice cream from one of the food trucks.

For families, I think this is much more than a place to stand around and watch airplanes. There are playgrounds, picnic areas, aircraft displays, restrooms, educational exhibits, and plenty of room for kids to move around before you ask them to sit still on an airplane.

One important clarification before you plan your visit: the CLT Airport Overlook is not inside Charlotte Douglas International Airport. There is currently no children’s playground inside the secure terminal. The Overlook is a separate outdoor park near the airport that you need to drive to.

Is the CLT Airport Overlook Worth Visiting With Kids?

Yes. I would absolutely recommend the CLT Airport Overlook with kids.

It is especially good for families with younger children, kids who love airplanes or transportation, and anyone trying to fill a little time before heading into the airport.

The park is completely free, and the current Overlook includes:

• two aviation-themed playground areas
• plane watching with views of the active airfield
• aviation displays, including the retired fighter jet
• open green space and picnic areas
• food trucks
• restrooms with changing stations
• free parking

There are also shaded seating areas with benches, trees, and sails around the property.

For my kids, the combination of the playground and the real airplanes is what makes it special.

We visit a lot of airport play areas when we travel, and some of them are essentially a climbing structure tucked into a terminal. The CLT Overlook feels much more like an actual destination.

The Playground at the CLT Airport Overlook

We have visited the CLT Airport Overlook twice now, and both visits looked a little different.

The first time, I was there with my husband and both of my kids. We spent well over an hour at the park. The kids played on the playground and ran around while my husband, who is a commercial pilot, was perfectly happy watching the constant stream of airplanes taking off and landing.

The playground itself is a really good one. It is large, aviation-themed, and spread out across several different sections, with some areas that work better for younger kids and others that are a better fit for bigger kids.

That size is probably my one hesitation with it.

It was very busy both times we visited, and when both of my kids were playing, I had to work pretty hard to keep track of where everyone was. I had my husband with me that first time, so it was manageable. But I travel alone with my kids often, and I know I would have found this playground pretty stressful by myself with both of them.

The park itself is fenced off from the airport, so kids cannot wander toward the airfield, but it is a very large space with plenty of room for a child to take off running. The parking lot is also right there, so this is not one of those playgrounds where I would personally feel comfortable sitting back and only half watching.

That said, I personally felt very safe during both of our visits. We were there during the day, there were plenty of other families around, and nothing about the park made me uncomfortable. My bigger concern was simply keeping track of two active kids in such a large, busy space rather than feeling unsafe at the Overlook itself.

Other than that, though, the park is phenomenal.

There is a ton of open green space for kids to run around, shaded picnic tables when you need a break, and some of the best airplane views we have found anywhere.

The playground itself is not shaded, so it can get hot, especially during a Charlotte summer. I would definitely bring water and sunscreen and keep the weather in mind when deciding how long to stay.

Our second visit was just my son and me. The playground happened to be temporarily closed for maintenance that day, but he still had a great time. He raced other kids along the little runway-inspired paths, checked out the fighter jet on display, and we grabbed ice cream from a food truck and ate it while watching airplanes take off and land.

That visit actually made me appreciate the Overlook even more because it was still worth stopping even without the playground.

Here’s a quick look at the playground and the airplane views so you can get a better feel for what the space is actually like.

Plane Watching and Other Things to See at the CLT Airport Overlook

The playground gets a lot of attention from families, but the main reason the CLT Airport Overlook exists is the airplane viewing.

The current Overlook faces active parts of the CLT airfield, with views toward Runways 1L-19R and 1R-19L and the airport terminal. Depending on traffic while you are there, you can watch aircraft taxi, take off, and land from surprisingly close by.

There is more to look at than just the planes in motion, too. The park includes aviation displays and educational signs about the airport, aircraft, and runways, along with a retired F-4 Phantom II fighter jet on display.

There are also runway-inspired paths and a lot of open space throughout the park, so even visitors who are not using the playground have room to walk around and explore.

For serious aviation fans, the plane watching alone could easily be the reason to stop. For families, I think those extra features are what make the Airport Overlook work even when kids are not actively playing.

Is There a Playground Inside Charlotte Airport?

No, and this is something that confused me when I first started looking for a playground at CLT.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport does not currently have a children’s playground inside the secure terminal. The playground you will see when searching for a “CLT airport playground” is at the Airport Overlook, which is a separate outdoor park near the airport.

So this is not something you can simply walk over to during a normal layover.

You would need to leave the secure area, get over to the park, and then return to the terminal and go through security again before your next flight.

For a typical connection, I personally would not go through all of that just for the playground. I am very willing to walk to another concourse for a good airport play area, but once I am through TSA with kids, bags, and a stroller, I usually want to stay there.

Where I think the Airport Overlook makes much more sense is before or after a flight when Charlotte is your starting or ending point, if you already have a rental car, or if someone is picking you up or dropping you off.

That said, some families really do have very long layovers. If you have enough time to comfortably leave the airport, the Overlook could be a fun way to get outside for a while instead of spending several hours in the terminal.

There does not appear to be a dedicated airport shuttle between the terminal and the Overlook. CLT’s free shuttle buses serve the airport parking lots and decks, so for a separate trip to the Overlook, you would most likely need a rental car, rideshare, taxi, or another prearranged transportation service.

Before you go, I would check CLT’s ground transportation information for the current rideshare, taxi, and pickup locations.

And if you are doing this during a layover, I would leave yourself a very generous buffer to get back to the terminal and through security again.

Using the CLT Airport Overlook Before a Flight

This is actually how we have used the Overlook both times we visited.

On each trip, we had a rental car and stopped at the park before returning the car at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. I really like using it this way because it gives the kids one last chance to run around outside before we head into the terminal.

On our most recent trip, my son had already spent the day walking around Uptown, visiting the NASCAR Hall of Fame and Discovery Place Science. Stopping at the Overlook gave him time to run around and watch airplanes before we moved into the much more structured part of the travel day.

If you are doing the same thing, I would just build in a comfortable buffer for returning the rental car, checking bags, getting through security, and reaching your gate.

Food, Bathrooms, and Family Amenities

The CLT Airport Overlook is really well set up for families.

There are restrooms with baby changing stations, which immediately makes it more practical with babies and toddlers. There are also covered picnic tables and other seating areas around the park.

The airport also operates a rotating food truck program at the Airport Overlook. At the time of writing, food trucks are scheduled Friday through Sunday, weather permitting, with lunch and dinner time blocks. The specific trucks change, so I would check the current schedule rather than planning around a particular vendor.

We happened to find an ice cream truck during our most recent visit, which was obviously a very easy sell with my son.

You could also bring your own food and use one of the picnic areas. Honestly, a picnic plus playground time plus plane watching sounds like a pretty great inexpensive Charlotte afternoon.

CLT Airport Overlook Hours, Parking, and Cost

The CLT Airport Overlook is located at:

5130 Airport Overlook Drive
Charlotte, NC 28208

Current posted hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, although the airport notes that operating hours can change.

Admission is free.

There is a paved parking lot directly at the Overlook, including accessible parking.

I would still check the official CLT Airport Overlook page shortly before your visit, especially if you are building the stop around a flight.

How Long Should You Spend at the CLT Airport Overlook?

I would allow at least an hour for most families.

That gives kids time to play, watch many planes, walk around, use the bathroom, and grab a snack if a food truck is there.

You could easily stay longer if your kids love airplanes or settle into the playground. On our first visit, we spent well over an hour there without trying to stretch out the stop.

If you are visiting before a flight, though, I would let your airport schedule determine when you leave rather than trying to squeeze every possible minute out of the park.

Other Things to Do Near the CLT Airport Overlook With Kids

You definitely do not need to be flying in or out of Charlotte to visit the Airport Overlook.

It works just as well as a free family stop during a regular Charlotte day, especially if your kids love airplanes, transportation, or playgrounds.

If you want to turn it into more of an aviation-themed outing, the Sullenberger Aviation Museum is also near Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

We have not visited that one yet, but it honestly looks like a really great stop for our family. My husband is a commercial pilot and we all love aviation, so I intentionally saved it for a future Charlotte trip when everyone can come.

I think pairing the museum with the Airport Overlook could make a really fun half day for an airplane-loving family. You could spend time inside the museum, then head over to the Overlook to let the kids run around and watch real planes taking off and landing.

Or, if you are building a bigger Charlotte day, the Overlook could easily work as a couple-hour stop alongside some of the other things to do in Charlotte with kids.

Our Take on the CLT Airport Overlook With Kids

The CLT Airport Overlook is such an easy stop with kids, especially if your family loves airplanes.

There is no admission fee, no complicated plan, and no need to stay for a certain amount of time. Kids can play, run around, watch airplanes, grab a snack, and leave when everyone is ready.

For us, it has worked especially well before a flight because it gives the kids one last chance to be outside and move before heading into the terminal.

And honestly, the fact that my son still loved it even when the playground was temporarily closed says a lot.

I would absolutely stop here again the next time we are passing through Charlotte.
