Charlotte Marriott City Center With Kids: Honest Review

Exterior entrance of Charlotte Marriott City Center in Uptown Charlotte.
Charlotte Marriott City Center sits right in Uptown, which made it easy for us to walk to parks, restaurants, and kid-friendly attractions during our short stay.

My almost 5-year-old son and I stayed at the Charlotte Marriott City Center after making a last-minute pivot at the end of our mother-son birthday trip.

This was supposed to be the final stretch of a 3-city trip through Columbia, Charleston, and Charlotte. But after getting rained out in Charleston, we decided to leave early and spend about 24 hours in Charlotte before our evening flight home.

I booked the Charlotte Marriott City Center only about 3 hours before we arrived. I chose it because I could use a Marriott free night award from my credit card, the reviews were strong, and the Uptown location looked perfect for the things I wanted to do with my son.

It ended up being the absolute best decision.

This hotel was one of the highlights of our entire trip. The location was fantastic, the staff were incredibly kind, the M Club was the best Marriott lounge I’ve experienced so far, and the hotel made what could have felt like a disappointing change of plans feel really special.

It’s not a kid-focused hotel in the sense that there’s no pool, kids club, or built-in family activities. But for a short city stay in Charlotte with a child, it worked beautifully.

Is Charlotte Marriott City Center a Good Fit With Kids?

Yes, Charlotte Marriott City Center is a great fit with kids, especially if you want to stay in Uptown Charlotte and walk to nearby attractions, restaurants, museums, and public transportation.

It’s a great fit if:

  • You want to stay in Uptown Charlotte
  • You want to walk to kid-friendly attractions like Discovery Place Science and the NASCAR Hall of Fame
  • You like being surrounded by restaurants and city activity
  • You want a modern, polished hotel that feels easy to navigate
  • You have Marriott Bonvoy elite benefits or want to book M Club access
  • You want a city hotel that feels clean, safe, and exciting
  • You do not need a pool

It might not be the best fit if:

  • Your kids really want a hotel pool
  • You need a bathtub for babies or toddlers
  • You prefer a quieter suburban hotel
  • You want free parking included
  • You want a hotel that is specifically designed around families
  • You are not planning to spend time in Uptown Charlotte

For us, the Charlotte Marriott City Center was exactly what we needed. It gave us a fresh start after our Charleston plans did not work out the way I had hoped, and it made our short Charlotte visit feel easy, special, and fun.

Location: Right in Uptown Charlotte and Perfect for Exploring

Charlotte Marriott City Center is located right in Uptown Charlotte, and for our trip, the location was perfect.

After leaving Charleston early, I really wanted the last part of our trip to feel easy. I did not want to keep getting in and out of the car or overthinking every little move. I wanted a hotel where we could park once, walk out the door, and have things nearby that actually worked with a young kid.

That is exactly what this location gave us.

The area felt safe, clean, and exciting, which mattered a lot because it was just me and my son. I felt comfortable walking around with him during the day, and there was enough close by that we could explore without making the logistics complicated.

We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go during our short stay, including Discovery Place Science and the NASCAR Hall of Fame. There were also plenty of restaurants nearby, so food never felt hard.

I loved the feel of Uptown Charlotte too.

There was this mix of tall city buildings, sidewalks, restaurants, public spaces, and little pockets of green space that made the area feel lively without feeling overwhelming. It felt like a real city, but still manageable with a 4-year-old.

That combination was exactly what I needed after Charleston. I wanted the last day of our trip to feel easy and fun, and this location made that possible.

The Room: A Huge Surprise Upgrade to the Vice Presidential Suite

I originally booked a standard guest room with 2 double beds.

But when we arrived, we ended up getting a major upgrade to the Vice Presidential Suite.

We had no idea until we opened the door.

The suite was absolutely massive. It was bigger than apartments I’ve lived in before, and it was far more space than my son and I could have ever needed for 1 night. But it was also incredibly fun to experience together, especially after the trip had taken a frustrating turn in Charleston.

The suite had 1 bedroom with a king bed, a full bathroom, and a sitting area. Then there was a large living room, a second half bathroom, a foyer, a dining area with a huge table, and a kitchen area with a full fridge and bar.

It was one of those moments you do not expect and definitely do not forget.

For traveling with kids, the room was surprisingly easy. Even though it was a suite, it was fairly minimal and not filled with lots of delicate decor or little things I would have been worried about my kids grabbing when they were younger. We have stayed in suites before where I felt like I had to constantly watch every corner of the room. This one felt spacious and special without feeling stressful.

The only real downside for families with younger kids is that the suite had a shower stall instead of a bathtub. That was completely fine for us on this trip, but if you have a baby, toddler, or child who needs a bath, it’s something to keep in mind.

Of course, I want to be very clear about the upgrade.

I’m a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite member, and one of the possible benefits of that status is a room upgrade when available. After booking, I messaged the hotel to ask if any upgrade might be available and explained that we were coming in from Charleston after getting rained out of our mother-son birthday trip.

That does not mean this kind of upgrade is typical.

We have received upgrades before, but they are usually much smaller, like a better view or a slightly nicer room. We have never received an upgrade this big before. The Vice Presidential Suite is available to book through the hotel’s website, but I would not stay here expecting that kind of surprise upgrade.

It was an incredibly kind gesture from the hotel, and it absolutely made our stay feel special. But even without the suite, I think this hotel would have been a great fit for our Charlotte stop.

If you want to get a better feel for how large the suite was and what the layout looked like, here’s a quick room tour:

What It Actually Feels Like to Stay at Charlotte Marriott City Center

Everything about this stay felt smooth from the beginning.

I booked the hotel while we were leaving Charleston, only about 3 hours before we arrived. After booking, I messaged the hotel through the Marriott app to ask about an upgrade if one was available and let them know we were trying to turn around a birthday trip that had been derailed by rain.

They responded quickly and warmly, which already made me feel better about the decision.

When we arrived, the front desk staff were incredibly sweet. They took the time to explain the amenities, tell us about the M Club, and make us feel genuinely welcomed.

Then we went upstairs, opened the door, and realized we had been placed in the Vice Presidential Suite.

And then it got even better.

Birthday cronuts and handwritten card from Charlotte Marriott City Center.
This handwritten card and cronuts from Coco and the Director were waiting in our room, and it completely changed the tone of our trip after getting rained out in Charleston.

There is a bakery and coffee shop in the hotel lobby called Coco and the Director, and it ended up being part of one of the sweetest surprises of our stay.

When we walked into the suite, there was a handwritten birthday card waiting for us, along with 2 cronuts from Coco and the Director.

My son and I could not believe it.

It was such a thoughtful gesture, and it completely changed the feeling of the trip. After leaving Charleston early and feeling like that part of the trip had not gone the way I hoped, walking into that room and finding a birthday surprise made Charlotte immediately feel special.

But, setting the upgrade and birthday treats aside, the hotel itself was still excellent.

It felt modern, clean, polished, and easy to navigate. We were on a high floor, and the elevators were fast and efficient, which I always appreciate in a city hotel with a child.

The hotel also has an M Club located right off the lobby, and this was easily the best Marriott lounge I’ve experienced so far.

We have stayed at quite a few Marriott properties recently, and this one stood out right away. It felt new, clean, spacious, and relaxed, and the food choices for evening appetizers, dessert, and breakfast the next morning were genuinely good.

Most importantly for me, they had a big coffee and espresso machine.

I made several vanilla lattes while we were there, and that alone made me very happy. My son loved being able to grab Starry from the lounge, which has apparently become one of his favorite hotel lounge rituals.

I had M Club access through my Marriott Bonvoy Platinum benefits, but you can also book a room with club access at this hotel.

This is one of the few hotel lounges where I do think paying extra for access could be worth it, especially with kids. Having breakfast handled, easy drinks available, and a place to pop in for a snack or reset during the day can make a city stay feel much easier.

If you want to get a better feel for the space, food setup, seating, and overall vibe, here’s a quick look around the M Club at Charlotte Marriott City Center:

The main thing to know for families is that there is no pool at this hotel. So if your kids are hoping for pool time, you may want to choose another property.

For us, that did not matter. We were only in Charlotte for about 24 hours, and there was enough to do nearby that we did not miss having a pool at all.

Transportation: Easy Walking in Uptown, With Transit Nearby

We drove into Charlotte with a rental car, so we parked in the garage connected with the hotel.

The garage is located underneath the hotel but is operated separately from the hotel. I had to scan a QR code in the garage and self-pay through an app for 24 hours of parking.

The garage itself felt like a pretty standard city parking garage. It felt safe enough, but it was not somewhere I wanted to linger alone with my preschooler at night. There were elevators inside the garage that took us directly up to the hotel lobby, which made the arrival and departure process easier.

Once we were parked, we walked everywhere.

That was one of the best parts of staying here. We could walk to the kid-friendly places we wanted to visit, walk to restaurants, and enjoy Uptown without needing to move the car.

Charlotte also has public transportation nearby. The CityLYNX Gold Line streetcar runs through Center City Charlotte, with stops connecting the Historic West End, Uptown, and the Elizabeth neighborhood.

We saw the streetcar while we were there, but we did not need to ride it because walking worked so well for us. At the time I’m writing this, Gold Line streetcar service is fare-free, though CATS notes that fares may be added again in the future.

Charlotte also has the LYNX Blue Line light rail, which runs through Uptown and other parts of the city.

We didn’t ride it during this trip, but we did spend some time watching the trains near the station by the NASCAR Hall of Fame. My son loved that, and it turned into one of those simple city moments that was more exciting to him than I expected.

We did not have a stroller with us on this trip, but this area looked very stroller-friendly to me. The sidewalks were wide, the station area was easy to access, and I would have felt completely comfortable navigating it with our double stroller.

For our short stay, the main transportation win was simply not needing much transportation at all. The location made it easy to park once and explore on foot.

Dining: M Club, Stoke, and Coco and the Director

M Club lounge at Charlotte Marriott City Center with kids, including tables, chairs, and a seating area.
The M Club at Charlotte Marriott City Center was the best Marriott lounge we’ve tried so far, and having easy breakfast, drinks, and snacks made the stay feel so much smoother.

Dining was another strong part of this stay.

The hotel has several food options, including Stoke Charlotte, Stoke Bar, Coco and the Director, M Club Lounge, and in-room dining.

We got dinner to go from Stoke Charlotte, the restaurant and bar in the lobby.

I ordered through the Marriott Bonvoy app, then went downstairs to pick it up so we could eat in our suite. That worked perfectly for us after a long day of changing plans, driving, and settling into Charlotte.

The food was pretty standard restaurant/bar-style food. We got a burger, salad, and chicken wings, and we really enjoyed it.

There is also Coco and the Director, the coffee shop and bakery in the lobby where the cronuts in our room came from. We did not stop by during our stay, but the cronuts were wonderful, and I loved that the hotel used something from its own lobby bakery as part of the birthday surprise.

Marriott’s website also says in-room dining is available by pressing 0 on the in-room phone, although we did not try it during our stay.

Between the M Club, Stoke, Coco and the Director, in-room dining, and all the nearby Uptown restaurants, food was very easy here.

That matters a lot with kids. I never felt like I had to work hard to figure out what we were going to eat.

What I Didn’t Love

  • No pool

Is Charlotte Marriott City Center Worth It With Kids?

Yes, I absolutely think Charlotte Marriott City Center is worth considering with kids, especially if you want to stay in Uptown Charlotte and explore the city on foot.

For our trip, it was the perfect last-minute pivot. We arrived after leaving Charleston early, and the hotel completely changed the tone of the end of our mother-son birthday trip.

The location made everything easy. We could walk to the places we wanted to visit, find food nearby, use the M Club for breakfast and snacks, and enjoy the city without needing to constantly move the car.

The staff were also a huge part of what made this stay memorable. The upgrade, handwritten card, and cronuts were far beyond anything I expected, but even without those extras, the hotel felt polished, welcoming, and easy to manage with a child.

The biggest drawback for families is the lack of a pool. If your kids really want hotel pool time, this may not be the best choice. And if you have younger kids who need a bathtub, I would pay close attention to the room type before booking.

But for a short Uptown Charlotte stay with kids, especially if your plans include Discovery Place Science, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, restaurants, and walking around the city, I thought this hotel was fantastic.

For us, Charlotte Marriott City Center turned a rained-out ending into one of the best parts of the whole trip.
